The most important part of a vehicle is undoubtedly the "Engine". The flawless functioning of the engine components significantly impacts the vehicle's performance. It contributes to its healthy operation and prevents major breakdowns. Engine overheating is a type of malfunction that, if left unchecked, can lead to blown head gaskets. When a car engine overheats, related components are damaged quickly, and as the problem progresses, the engine will become unusable.
Why does a car engine overheat?
1. Coolant Shortage: For an engine to operate at its ideal temperature when cold, the coolant level must be full. A low coolant level causes the vehicle to run at a higher or more unstable speed than normal, leading to engine overheating. If your vehicle is experiencing overheating problems, a decrease in coolant level is likely the cause.
2. Radiator malfunction: The radiator is responsible for dissipating excess heat from the engine. A clogged radiator causes the temperature to remain at the same level. If there is a sudden increase in engine temperature, the radiator needs to be checked.
3. Thermostat malfunction: If the thermostat remains closed or malfunctions, a heat problem occurs between the pipes. Heat control in the engine weakens. Temperature differences are observed in the hoses. Replacing the thermostat hoses solves the problem.
4. Radiator Fan Not Working: If the radiator fan doesn't engage, the engine will heat up quickly, especially in city traffic. This will cause overheating and, due to stop-and-go driving, can lead to significant engine malfunctions.
5. Water Pump Failure: The water pump's function is to regulate heat. It keeps a certain amount of heat inside the motor and helps to expel unnecessary heat. The water pump should be checked at regular intervals, and replaced if necessary.
6.Insufficient Engine Oil: If the engine oil level is low, engine performance decreases. Low oil levels unnecessarily raise the engine temperature. The engine cannot operate at the desired level. It struggles, expends excessive power, and causes a sudden increase in engine temperature.
Solving the Overheating Problem
• Antifreeze level should be checked regularly and topped up if necessary.
• Radiator and hoses should be maintained and cleaned.
• Thermostat and fan systems should be checked.
• Leaks in the water pump and hoses should be repaired.
• Engine oil should be checked and changed.
