Car Thermostat Failure Symptoms and Solution

Car thermostat failures are rare but, if ignored, can spread to other parts. The thermostat helps transfer most of the heat. If the thermostat malfunctions, sufficient heat cannot be exchanged to the necessary areas. This will cause the temperature to rise above the normal level. If more heat is retained than needed and not released, malfunction symptoms will begin, starting in the engine and escalating to overheating. Understanding the symptoms of thermostat failure and addressing them when necessary is of serious importance.

                                                     Thermostat Failure Symptoms

Excessive Overheating: The thermostat is the part that controls engine temperature and overheating in vehicles. If the thermostat malfunctions, the temperature can suddenly rise to very high levels. If it rises above normal levels, the thermostat should be checked immediately.

Slow Engine Warm-up: If the engine remains cold even after the car has been running for a certain period, a thermostat malfunction may have begun. If the engine is not supplied with enough heat, it will not reach its maximum temperature no matter how long it runs. If the fans are constantly blowing cold air, this could be a sign of a thermostat malfunction.

Continuous Cold Blowing from the Heater: The thermostat directly affects the proper functioning of the vehicle's fans. If the heater blows cold air when turned on and doesn't provide heat even after some time, it's evidence that a thermostat malfunction has begun.

                                            How to Troubleshoot Thermostat Problems

Thermostat Replacement: When a thermostat malfunction is detected, it must be replaced. The thermostat part cannot be repaired or fixed. The entire thermostat must be replaced. Once the new part is installed, the thermostat malfunction will be resolved.

Antifreeze Level Check: Check the antifreeze level; if it's low or mixed differently, drain it completely and refill it. If oil-like liquids mix with the antifreeze, the thermostat won't be able to properly detect the temperature.

Temperature Sensor Check: In case of a thermostat malfunction, the temperature will continuously rise. Insufficient heat is being supplied. The temperature sensor light on the instrument panel will constantly change. Because heat is not being transmitted at a sufficient level, the sensor will fluctuate.
